Description
A ship's marine CO2 fire suppression is an essential piece of equipment on any ship.
Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is heavier than air. It has a high expansion rate, making it an effective fire extinguishing agent. When released into confined spaces, it displaces oxygen, suffocating fires.A ship's CO2 fire suppression system consists of many components including storage tanks, relief valves, piping and nozzles. Carbon dioxide is stored in high pressure cylinders and released through manual or automatic valves. Pipes deliver the CO2 to nozzles, which are strategically placed throughout the ship,
In the event of a fire, the CO2 system is activated manually or automatically. The valve opens, allowing CO2 to flow through the tube andnozzle. The high-pressure carbon dioxide expands as it exits the nozzle, forming a cloud that smothers the fire by reducing the oxygenconcentration.
The ship must be evacuated before releasmng the CO2 extinguishing agent as it can be dangerous to humans. C02 can displace oxygen, posiblcausing asphyxiation.
In conclusion, a ship's carbon dioxide fire suppression system is a very effective method of fighting fires on board. Its fast response and high performance make it a must have security device. However, it must be used with caution and only in emergency situations where people are evacuated safely.
Taxonomy
System for machinery spaces
System for machinery spaces mainly consists of cylinder unit, pneumatic selection valve, nozzles, pipeline, etc.
The system remotely controlled through remote control station. There is alarm before and during the release of CO2.
System for cargo holds
System for cargo holds consists of cylinder unit(sectioned by protection volume), tee valve unit, and nozzle incargo holds. The system is started by manually turning tee valve, then open head valve, and release CO2extinguish the fire.
